Cool and Easy Way to Identify a Bird

I visited the Washington, DC Tidal Basin on the weekend and before getting caught in the pouring rain I had a chance to go on a paddle boat! This is a great way to get a new perspective on the amazing monuments in DC and nature watching. Surrounded by the Jefferson, Martin Luther King, and Washington monuments and memorials you can also enjoy an urban bird watching experience.

Check this 23 second Youtube video of bird watching in the Tidal Basin, DC:

But how would a beginner bird watcher with no professional help can start identifying and learning about the birds he just watched? I Google “How to Identify a bird” and found this really cool and easy way to do just that: National Geographic’s Backyard Bird Identifier (http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/birding/backyard-bird-identifier/).

Just identify the region and State (in this case DC) , season and month the bird was seen, the birds colors and approximate size. With just answering 4 easy questions you can narrow your search to a couple of possible matches. In my case I just got one match: Canada Goose. The app also gives you interesting information about the bird and its migratory pattern.

Cool!
