Embarking On A New Adventure

Before heading to Alaska, I arrived in San Diego, California for shorebird training. The week was full of skill building, adventure, friendship, and fun! It was great to finally meet the other interns and spend a week together learning about shorebirds and bonding. We all had many things in common, especially our love for nature! I am very grateful to have been able to attend training along with receiving my first pair of binoculars! It was great going out in the field to practice identifying shorebirds in San Diego, CA along with my new friends and mentors. When training came to an end, I knew the day for me to travel to Alaska was finally near.

Friday, March 7, 2014 was the date I arrived in Cordova, Alaska! Thanks to Cara, I had the window seat through out my flight and was able to see Alaska from above. I imagined myself as a shorebird, migrating north, and I was lost for words and admired those little Plovers and Sandpipers I had seen during training for being so resilient as they traveled north.

My first day at work with the U.S. Forest Service was unforgettable! I learned to cross-country ski, saw a moose, a dozen bald eagles, and a magpie! I am eager to learn and  experience as much as I can while I am here in Alaska, and look forward to the arrival of my shorebird friends in the following weeks!
