An Oasis in the Desert

Surrounded by mountains and billions of stars at night, lies a network of wetlands that animals use as a sanctuary, an oasis in a vast desert. The variation at this location is stellar. Marshes, wetlands, fresh and salt water ponds, it is a place that accommodates every bird that takes a trip into the San Luis Valley. This is where I will be spending my summer, going from pond to pond, avoiding and getting sucked into the thick mud, and being with the tremendous amount of wildlife that utilize this area. To be the one to experience this, to be the one to share this with others, I feel so extremely fortunate.  I look forward to what lies ahead.

Have you ever looked up into the night sky to see billions of stars staring back? Do you know that feeling of mystery,  boggelment and excitement? That is how I feel walking into this internship. This place is so vast I don’t know where to start, I don’t know how I can show people the importance of this place. But like everything, the only way to figure it out and learn is to take the first step, and I am excited to get this started.
