Internship work will focus on migratory/nesting bird projects, citizen science and public outreach. You will assist in a variety of shorebird work, as well as habitat restoration tasks. The intern will create and deliver bilingual (English/Spanish) public presentations, work onsite with educators as part of our environmental education and interpretative programs, develop and implement an outreach program into the local Spanish-speaking communities, and help with International Migratory Bird Day.
Knowledge of bird conservation not needed, but a willingness to learn is required and an enthusiasm for interacting with the public and children is strongly encouraged. You will receive all necessary professional training and will gain real-life job experience working alongside our wildlife staff and environmental education specialists. Wildlife fieldwork with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is focused on the wetlands, marshes and playas of the Blanca Wetlands, which are accessible to the public and heavily used by local communities for recreation. The work will include trekking, standing and working in deep sand, mud, water and vegetation. Interns will work in the elements (cold weather, hot weather, wet and humid, exposure to insects and other animals) and must be conditioned and able to tolerate working outdoors. Interns will help BLM staff and biologist on various projects involving wildlife surveys and habitat restoration projects.
The duration of the internship is 6 months (March – September). Interns will be provided with lodging for the duration of the internship and compensated with a monthly stipend. Interns will also participate in a weeklong training in San Diego (all expenses included) before the start of the internship.
