Each time I go out to do more bird surveys I enjoy it more and more. These creatures are so amazing, and as I get more comfortable I am able to recognize different species by specific behaviors, and even calls sometimes!
The flocks of Western Sandpipers are growing substantially each day, and it is fabulous to see them flying in such unison. I also have lots of fun scanning the birds and easily being able to pick out the Dunlins (with their black bellies for breeding season) that hang out in the large flocks. It is so beautiful to see these birds in their breeding plumage.
It is quite weird to think about the fact that just over a month and a half ago I barely paid any attention to birds – let alone shorebirds. Now I can’t go anywhere without noticing the birds and wondering if I know what species they are…a bird nerd!
