International Migratory Bird Day
As the Environment for the Americas intern, I will be organizing this year’s International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) event at the Yaquina Head Interpretive Center, on May 14th from 10am-2pm. For this event, I will be collaborating with the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) and Oregon State Parks (Beaver Creek) to host different activities at their respective sites. Each location will offer interactive activities ranging from nature walks to bird games, free of charge! We will encourage visitors to go to all three locations (Yaquina Head, HMSC, and Beaver Creek) in an effort to demonstrate the migration of shorebirds from countries in Latin America to Newport, Oregon. Children will receive a passport and a visa stamp at each location. Prizes and bird swag will be given away, so don’t miss out! For this event, I have reached out to several organizations to satisfy the Latino outreach component. The Centro de Ayuda, a not-for-profit educational organization, will hand out flyers to their participants, and the Oregon Coast Community College will allow me to speak in their English as a Second Language (ESL) classes about the internship and its goals. I will also be recruiting bilingual volunteers, making Hablo Español buttons, and reaching out to businesses whose target audiences are Latinos. Wish me luck! IMBD is just one month and a few days away!
