Last weekend, the ECC held DC Bird Fest at the Monique Johnson Anacostia River Center. We had games, crafts, live birds of prey and, of course, my handmade piñata. I constructed a Jeop-birdy board and we gave buddy bracelets to everyone that participated. Kids also got to make bird feeders and masks with bird feathers. Our art contest had submissions from kids aged 4- 15 years old, with an Artreach student, Christian, winning the grand prize of a boat tour of the Anacostia River for her and 4 guests. Three raptors were present for the festival, a Eurasian Eagle-Owl, Harris Hawk, and Red-tailed hawk. The kids really enjoyed the chance to meet birds of prey and pet them.
Although the turnout wasn’t as large as I anticipated, I think it was great for the first event I had planned myself. If this event is done in following years I would suggest a bigger marketing campaign, having partner organizations set up activity tables and asking them to share the event with their social media followers and at events leading up to the festival. It was a great learning experience, though, and the kids that participated had a lot of fun meeting our birds, taking home crafts and especially hitting the piñata.
