This week was the Insectigations Discovery Lab at the Tijuana Estuary event. There were craft tables and activities exploring ants, bees and all types of other critters in their habitats. I partnered up with Jess Davids, and together we created a bee pollination game using corn hole boards decorated as flowers and handmade bees using duct tape dipped in crushed yellow chalk (pollen). Jess also had a whole table filled with fact sheets, colorful pictures, and a specimen of an actual native bee that she had collected. IMAG2220The visitors learned how the pollen is carried, and were all given the chance to become a native bee by trying to aim the bees into the center of the flowers. The chalk added a neat effect to show the players how much “pollen” was getting around the flower before actually making it into the center. The game was a success! I look forward to the next Discovery Lab in August!
