June is Great Outdoors Month, and Great Outdoors Day is the way The Corps Network celebrates it! This was the third year of the event, with youth corps from around the country volunteering in the nation’s capital for a day of service.
This year the event began at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial along the Tidal Basin, known as the best spot in town during the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Robert Bonnie, U.S. Department of Agriculture Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment, welcomed volunteers and thanked us for our participation. The volunteers were split among two locations: Rock Creek Park and the National Mall. Volunteers on the Mall had maintenance tasks such as sweeping steps, painting railings, and putting down mulch. I volunteered at Rock Creek Park, a neighbor to Smithsonian’s National Zoo, where we removed hundreds of invasive plants including ivies.
