This week was a very special opportunity for the Blanca crew (or what is left of us) to handle wild ducks for banding. This project has been going on for a few years, the focus being on determining the number of Cinnamon Teal for hunting.
There are several people involved in this effort, putting web tags on the chicks before they hatch (sounds weird, I know, but they actually put tags on them a day before they hatch), putting nasal tags on females to assess site fidelity, and working with several other banding sites around the country.
Most of the ducks we banded were juvenile teal, which means that this year was a successful breading season.
Though we got scratched up and it was not the cleanest job ever, it was still a blast and fun to do.
