On April 5, I had another shorebird survey with Tania Romero and a wonderful West LA college student volunteer, Dianna. She has help us before and this was her third time being with us. She has quickly learned to identify most shorebirds in a short amount of time. This time I taught her how to set up the scope and let her scan the Ballona Creek to count shorebirds. I consider her to be a star volunteer because she is open-minded and never fails to notice shorebirds we surely have not spotted. I’m sure the shorebirds love having her around because they stay long enough for her to spot them and we sure do love having her around too!
