Internship work will focus on migratory/nesting bird projects, citizen science and public outreach; however, you will be provided with opportunities to experience other wildlife conservation jobs during the internship. You will assist in a variety of shorebird surveys as well as participate in other wildlife-related fieldwork. The intern will develop and deliver bilingual (English/Spanish) public presentations, work onsite with educators as part of our environmental education and interpretative programs, develop and implement an outreach program for local Spanish-speaking communities and visitors and help with the Watsonville International Migratory Bird Day Festival.
Knowledge of bird conservation is not needed, but a willingness to learn is required and an enthusiasm for interacting with the public and children is encouraged. You will receive all necessary professional training and will gain real-life job experience working alongside our wildlife staff and environmental education specialists. This is a great opportunity for career shadowing and hands-on experience in the fields of wildlife biology and environmental education.
Wildlife fieldwork with the Elkhorn Slough is focused on-site at areas accessible to the public and used by local communities. The work will focus on research being done on disturbance effects on reproductive success of local Black Oystercatchers. Intern will work with scientists and biologist on staff as well as previous EFTA interns in the Monterey area.
The duration of the internship is 7 months (February – September). Interns will NOT be provided with lodging for the duration of the internship and they are responsible for their own housing costs. Interns in the Santa Cruz – Watsonville – Monterey area are encouraged to apply. Interns are compensated with a monthly stipend and will be required to participate in a weeklong training in San Diego (all expenses included) before the start of their internship.
